In 1911, Masujiro Hashimoto founded the Kwaishinsha Motor Car Works in Tokyo's Azabu-Hiroo district. By 1914, the company's first car was produced. That vehicle's name, DAT, was an acronym of the initial letters of the surnames of the company's investors: Kenjiro Den, Rokuro Aoyama, and Meitaro Takeuchi. The company name evolved over the next few years, with production focused mainly on trucks due to a practically non-existent passenger car market in Japan at that time. However, 1931 saw the Datsun Type 11 passenger car roll out. That same year, the company became an affiliate of Tobata Casting, merging into that company in 1933. Thus, the first connections to the Nissan name -- which derived from the Tokyo Stock Exchange abbreviation used for Nihon Sangyo (Tobata Casting's parent company) were formed.

While the marque was first introduced to the United States market under the Datsun name in the 1950s, The line was rebadged to the Nissan name in the mid-1980s to emphasize the company's proper name. Since then, the brand has become one of the most popular in North America -- offering a comprehensive lineup of sports cars, sedans, SUVs, pickup trucks, and even electric vehicles to suit every driver's tastes.
